To put it more technically, the input common mode range of a single supply op amp pretty much has to include the negative rail, and the output stage has to be able to sink a milliamp or so when the load is only of the order of a hundred millivolts more positive than the negative rail.

Which you use depends on the application. If you a just amplifying from a circuit with a common ground, then single supply is ok.
Or say you want to amplify a sine wave with a centre zero reference, then you must use a dual supply. Doing a search on the net for op amp theory will give you a better understanding. I'm trying to pick an op-amp and I'm having trouble figuring out if the op-amp needs a positive and a negative power supply or if I can connect it to ground and the positive supply. Most if not all op-amps can be used in either configuration. Voltage is relative, and "ground" is just an arbitrary potential that you assign the value of 0 volts.
There are op-amps "optimized" for one configuration or the other, but they can be used in either. This op-ampfor instance, is "optimized for single supply operation", and they emphasize features like:. All op amps have two power pins. This is an attempt on the part of the data sheet author to categorize the part as a split-supply or single-supply part. However, it does not mean that the op amp has to be operated that way — it may or may not be able to operate from different voltage rails. Consult the data sheet for the op amp, especially the absolute maximum ratings and voltage-swing specifications, before operating at anything other than the recommended power-supply voltage s. The LF you mentioned for instance does not have a constant drop out across input voltage options. Theres a graph in the datasheet showing this. You have to consider all these in determining your maximum output swing and these numbers are usually defined in the graphs in the datasheet.
When you look for an op amp for a specific purpose you can get away with generic op amps but you will find better performance in parts designed for the task at hand. The op amp designers usually attempt to mitigate some the variations i've listed above for particular applications.
Additionally rail to rail op amps usually have low drive capabilities. First, what you call "drop-out" can be found on page 3 of the datasheet as output voltage swing. Voltage is not absolute, but rather relative to some reference point. It works exactly the same. It's you who decides where the reference, ground, lies. Outputs will go to a few tens of mV from the rails, and input signals close to the rails will be handled correctly as well. Non-RRIO will accept any input voltage as long as it's between the rails, but voltages close to the rails won't be amplified correctly.

Generating the negative supply is quite easy: DC - DC converters, switched capacitor converters or for mains-powered equipment a simple centre-tapped transformer and rectifier.
Don't understand what you mean by "run through capacitors". There will usually be bypass capacitors from the power supply rails to ground. This is to bypass noise and ac signals to ground. Usually very important to have these bypass capacitors for stable operation of the circuit.
With single-supply designs there can be a pseudo-ground reference, often at half the supply voltage. Signals can swing above and below this voltage instead of 0V. For applications where the exact DC voltage level is important test and measurement the exact voltage of this pseudo-ground is very important and must be stable.

It only takes a minute to sign up. Can i use dual supply op amp in single supply mode? Is it okay to convert a bipolar voltage to uni polar and then feed it to a single supply op amp amplifier? From the perspective of an op-amp, it sees two power rails, one more positive than the other and that's all it cares about. From my experience I cannot ever remember seeing one and I've had a lot of experience! As long as you do not violate any of the specifications it will work. In many cases that puts excessive constraints on your design.
Most dual supply opamps have an input voltage range that does not include either supply rail. And Vout often does not swing all the way to positive or negative supply.
Sometimes the few mV matters.

Hello Forum, I have been working on a color organ project for my school but came across one issue. Ive been trying to set up LMN op-amp to work properly. The problem is that i cant get a simple inverting circuit to work. However the output reads only the same voltage i input it.
This time im trying to set them up with 9V battery and so far no success of getting anything meaningful. Ive searched countless hours on setting up single power supplies, dual power-supplies with one or two 9v batteries, but still no success. Someone please point me into the right direction. I looked at data sheets of the op amp and it clearly says that the chip supports single supply. PDF and this is how the simple circuit is set up.

Wendy Joined Mar 24, 21, Two things. When you have an unused gate or op amp ground the inputs to shut it down. Second thing, you can use that second op amp as a power supply. You can use two batteries to make a dual power supply, but most cases it is not needed.
